Chapter Fourteen
Ilsa didnât know what had come over her. One minute she was out walking with Zach, deciding she was over her snit, and the next she had her arms around him, her body pressed against his, and was kissing him like sheâd die if she had to hold off for one more second.
His arms went around her, and she reveled in the way that he pulled her close, deepening the kiss that sheâd started. It felt as if a year of pent-up passion was being poured into the kiss, and Ilsa wanted to stay right there forever.
But reality soon butted in when Mia let out a small cry, making it clear she missed being the center of attention.
Ilsa and Zach pulled apart, both of them slightly breathless. They both reached for Mia at the same time, but Zach got to her first, swiftly cradling her into his embrace. She settled instantly.
âWhat are you? The baby whisperer?â Ilsa asked, feeling both slightly annoyed and amazed at his effect on the child. âShe only settles down like that once Iâm feeding her.â
He chuckled. âWell, I can see why sheâd be impatient.â
Ilsa rolled her eyes. âWhatever.â But then she watched them together and felt her lips curl into a contented smile. When she let her guard down, their little unit just felt right. âLooks like youâre carrying her for part of this walk.â
âNot a problem.â He hoisted her so that she was resting against his shoulder and then nodded to the stroller. âIf you can handle that, Iâve got the precious cargo under control.â
âYou got it.â They walked along the tree-lined road, talking about everything and nothing. Neither of them mentioned the kiss, and to her surprise, instead of feeling awkward about it, she just felt content. The sun was out. Her daughter was happy. And the man sheâd been half in love with for years was by her side, laughing and chatting and making plans for the upcoming week. It all felt so⦠normal and perfect. Much better than the last few days when sheâd been wallowing in self-pity.
It was well past time she started working on her trust issues. And after Lily had apologized to her, affirming that she was the one whoâd kissed Zach, Ilsa had decided she couldnât hold anyone, not even Zach, to a perfect standard. She didnât even want to. What she wanted was a partner, someone to lean on, someone to love. And in her heart, she knew that person was Zach. He was nothing like Kevin, and she just needed to learn to trust her instincts.
By the time they made it back to Hollyâs house, Ilsa felt better than she had in weeks. The walk had energized her, but her time with Zach had lifted her mood, and she knew sheâd tuck the memory of the day in her mind as one of those perfect Christmas season moments with her new family. Because no matter what happened between her and Zach, there was no doubt that he was family now.
